Zoning and the DRPCE
ATEX zoning and drafting of the explosion protection document (DRPCE / DRPE) for the installations concerned.
Explosion risk · ATEX
ATEX Risk Manager (CFPA / CNPP) and Explosion Protection Manager (CFPA Europe), Sergio DOSSOU assesses explosion risk and helps reduce it on ICPE and SEVESO sites: from hazard studies to the safety culture of teams.
What ATEX expertise covers
Four areas of work, practised on operating industrial sites:
ATEX zoning and drafting of the explosion protection document (DRPCE / DRPE) for the installations concerned.
Hazard studies (EDD), modelling of fire thermal effects with Flumilog, D9 / D9A calculations (fire-water demand and retention) and fire vulnerability study.
HAZOP (P&ID), HAZID, SILS, management of change and reliability of instrumented risk-control measures (MMRI).
Compliance with the Machinery Directive, LOTOV lockout/tagout/verify, prevention plans, work permits and control of co-activity.
Experience
ATEX risk has been handled in several leadership, transition and consulting assignments:
Montoir-de-Bretagne · upper-tier SEVESO ICPE · transition management (2024 – 2026).
Val-de-Reuil · ICPE subject to authorisation (IED) · 2022 – 2024.
Upper-tier SEVESO ICPE sites · 2019 – 2022.
ICPE site with over 1,400 employees · 2013 – 2017.

Frequently asked questions
ATEX comes from the French « atmosphères explosives » (explosive atmospheres). Two European directives frame the subject: Directive 2014/34/EU, which sets requirements for manufacturers of equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, and Directive 1999/92/EC, which sets minimum requirements for the safety and health protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres. Employer obligations are transposed into the French Labour Code.
The explosion protection document (document relatif à la protection contre les explosions): the employer draws it up and keeps it up to date, and it is integrated into the single risk-assessment document (DUERP). It identifies and assesses explosion risks, sets out the measures taken and the classification into zones of places where explosive atmospheres may occur, and covers how workplaces and equipment are designed, operated and maintained. It is also called DRPE.
An ICPE or SEVESO site may contain areas with explosive atmospheres (gases, vapours, dusts). The employer’s ATEX obligations stem from the Labour Code and apply whatever the site’s classification; on a classified site, the ATEX analysis must be coordinated with the hazard study and risk-control measures governed by the Environmental Code.

On ICPE sites, including upper-tier SEVESO sites, in chemicals, pharmaceuticals, energy and aerospace, notably at Yara, Sanofi, Bolloré Energy and Howmet Castings.
